Chiropractic care has been around for more than a century, and there’s still plenty of confusion about it. Some people think it’s only for back pain. Some think it’s mostly about the popping sound. Some aren’t sure whether it’s safe, or whether it’s for them at all.

Here’s a plain answer, from the doctors at CREW in Milton.

Five things chiropractic care is

1. Hands-on care for the spine and joints

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled movement applied to a joint that isn’t moving well. The goal is to restore motion, ease the muscles that have tightened around it, and reduce pain. It’s done by hand, with a small instrument, or on a drop table, depending on what suits you.

2. Built on an exam, not a guess

Good chiropractic starts with finding out what’s actually going on. At CREW that means your history, a physical exam, a digital posture scan, a nerve scan, and x-rays in our office when your exam calls for them. Your plan is built on what we find, and we re-measure every twelve visits.

3. For more than back pain

Back pain is the most common reason people come in, and it’s one of the things chiropractic helps most. We also see neck pain, headaches that start in the neck, sciatica, disc problems, shoulder, knee and foot pain, and athletes who want to move and recover better.

4. Part of a bigger plan

Adjustments are often one piece of care. Many plans here also include soft-tissue work, spinal decompression for disc problems, SoftWave for stubborn tendon pain, and exercises you do at home so the change holds.

5. Personal to you

A runner with heel pain, a desk worker with neck pain and a mom in her third trimester all need different care. Your doctor chooses techniques that fit your body and your comfort, including gentle low-force options if you’d rather skip the twisting.

Five things chiropractic care isn’t

1. Just “cracking backs”

The pop you sometimes hear is gas releasing from the fluid in a joint. It’s harmless, and an adjustment works whether or not you hear it. The goal is how the joint moves, not the noise.

2. One size fits all

We don’t run everyone through the same routine. Two people with “back pain” can have completely different causes, and their plans should look different.

3. Forever, by default

Most plans have a clear start and finish. Once your plan is done, you decide what comes next. Some people choose occasional visits to stay where they are; some don’t.

4. Risky when done properly

Serious problems are rare when care is given by a licensed chiropractor after a proper exam. Feeling a bit sore for a day after your first few visits is common, like after a new workout. If anything in your exam suggests chiropractic isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you and refer you.

5. A replacement for medical care

Chiropractic works alongside your physician, not instead of them. If your exam shows something that needs medical attention, imaging or a specialist, we refer you.

See a doctor or urgent care first if your pain follows a serious fall or accident, or comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, numbness in the groin, trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, or new weakness in an arm or leg.

What to expect at CREW

Your first visit takes 30 to 45 minutes: a conversation about what’s going on, your scans, and an exam. At your second visit, your doctor walks you through what they found and a plan you can see on one page. Then you get to work, with re-scans every twelve visits so you can see your progress in numbers, not just feel it.
