Conditions · Knee pain

Knee pain.

An ache below the kneecap on stairs, pain that builds a few miles into a run, a stiff knee in the morning. The knee often takes the blame for problems that start at the hip or foot.

Common causes

  • Hips or feet that change how the knee tracks
  • Tendon pain around the kneecap
  • A tight IT band on the outside of the knee
  • Arthritis and wear
  • Training load that climbed too fast

How we find the cause

We look at the whole leg: how your hips, knees and feet line up and move, measured with posture analysis, plus a nerve scan and x-rays in our office when your exam calls for them.

How we treat it

  • Adjustments for the knee, hip, ankle and foot so the leg tracks well.
  • Soft-tissue work for the muscles that control the knee.
  • SoftWave for tendon pain and arthritis.
  • Strength work for the hips and legs, built around your training.

What helps right now

  • Swap running for cycling or swimming for a few days if it’s flaring.
  • Ice for 15 minutes after activity.
  • Check your shoes. Worn-out running shoes are a common culprit.
Get urgent care first if your knee locks or gives way with swelling after a twist, you can't put weight on it, or it's hot, red and swollen with a fever.

From CREW patients

“I’ve been in chronic knee pain for two years now, and doing SoftWave therapy with Ben is the only thing that has consistently provided relief.”

“I came in with knee pain due to an injury from the gym. I live an active lifestyle and was impatient to get back to 100%. Eric and Mallory have fixed me from top to bottom.”

Common questions

Can you help with knee arthritis?

Often, yes. Many people with arthritis move better and hurt less with care, and SoftWave can help with the pain. It won’t reverse the arthritis, and we’ll say so.

I’m a runner. Do I have to stop?

Usually not. We’d rather adjust your training than take it away.

Do I need an MRI?

Only if your exam suggests something like a ligament or meniscus tear. If so, we’ll refer you.
