Conditions · Low back pain

Low back pain.

The ache after a long day at the desk, the sharp catch when you bend, the stiffness that takes an hour to loosen in the morning. Most low back pain is mechanical, which means it can be measured, and changed.

Why backs hurt

  • Joints in the low back or pelvis that have stopped moving well
  • Long hours of sitting, driving or looking down at a screen
  • Disc irritation, with or without pain down the leg
  • Training load that outpaces recovery
  • An old injury the body has been working around

How we find the cause

We measure before we treat: a digital posture analysis, a nerve scan, and x-rays in our office when your exam calls for them. You see the results, and your doctor explains what they mean before recommending anything.

How we treat it

Specific adjustments to restore movement, soft-tissue work for the muscles that have tightened around the problem, and a few exercises to keep it from coming back. When a disc is involved we add decompression, and for stubborn muscle and tendon pain, SoftWave.

What helps right now

  • Walk. Gentle movement helps most backs recover faster than rest.
  • Change position often. The best posture is the next one.
  • Heat for stiffness, ice for a fresh flare.
Get urgent care first if your back pain follows a serious fall or accident, or comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, numbness in the groin, or trouble controlling your bladder or bowels.

Common questions

Will an adjustment fix it in one visit?

You may feel better after one. Lasting change takes a plan, because the joints and muscles need time to hold the new position.

Do I need x-rays?

Not always. We take them in our office when the exam says they’re needed, and explain why first.

Is it safe to work out?

Usually, with adjustments to your training. Our doctors train too, and we’d rather modify your workouts than stop them.
